Behind the Scenes at IRONMAN: The Marquees That Keep the Race Moving

For IRONMAN’s endurance triathlons, every second counts. That applies not only to the athletes but also to the teams working behind the scenes to keep each event running smoothly. With thousands of competitors taking on challenging swim, bike and run courses, logistics must be precise, efficient and reliable.

That is where the team at Good Intents come in!

Dean Smith, Operations Director for IRONMAN UK, oversees major triathlons across the UK each year. “We run events in Bolton, Swansea, Leeds, Weymouth and Tenby,” he explains, “Good Intents provide marquees for Swansea and Tenby, which are both large and high-profile events.”

Creating Calm, Comfort and Coordination

Each IRONMAN event involves several disciplines and thousands of participants. Dedicated areas are needed for registration and medical support as well as helping the participants to transition between stages. Marquees are essential for keeping these spaces organised, accessible, and protected from the weather.

“We usually have three or four marquees per event,” Dean says, “One for registration and merchandise, one for medical, one for transition between swim, bike and run, and one for post-race recovery. They’re functional shelters rather than decorative venues, but they are central to how the event operates.”

Positioning is crucial. The medical tent must be close to the finish line, the transition area needs to sit alongside bike racking and the registration marquee should be within easy reach for athletes and spectators. Up to 2,500 bikes and their riders will make their way through these shelters, and each must be accommodated safely and efficiently.

A Trusted Partnership Built on Reliability

IRONMAN has worked with Good Intents for several years. We are one of three trusted marquee providers used by IRONMAN UK and Dean says the relationship continues because the service we provide is consistently strong. “Good Intents are always professional, safety conscious and easy to deal with. Their marquees are clean, well installed and ready when we need them.”

The marquees often stay in place for a week to allow for set up, transitions and post-race recovery areas. Good Intents’s crews ensure everything runs smoothly from delivery to dismantling, adapting quickly to any changes required. “The team are always helpful, pleasant and efficient,” Dean adds. “We can rely on them to get things done.”

Energy and Excitement at Every Stage

From the calm focus of the early morning registration to the cheers and celebrations at the finish line, the marquees are at the heart of the event’s atmosphere. “Before the race there is a mix of excitement, nerves and anticipation,” Dean explains. “At the end it is all emotion and relief, and a real sense of achievement.”

Looking Ahead

IRONMAN plans to continue working with Good Intents in the year ahead. “We always get quotes from several suppliers and Good Intents are consistently competitive,” Dean says. “They offer good value for the quality of service and equipment they provide, and everyone on our team enjoys working with them.”

From registration and transition to recovery and celebration, Good Intents helps Dean and the rest of his team at IRONMAN UK to create safe, well-managed spaces that keep the focus where it belongs: on the competitors and their amazing achievements.
